RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University football team will begin Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Divisional play on Saturday, Oct. 8 when the Bears play host to the Broncos of Fayetteville State University at Durham County Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
Saturdays contest will mark the 32nd time the Bears and Broncos will meet as FSU holds a 14-13-5 overall record. The game is also themed as Community Organization Day. All organizations are $5.00.
The Bears (0-5, 0-2 CIAA) are still in search of its first win on the season after last weekend's 28-21 loss at Elizabeth City State. Shaw went toe-to-toe with the Vikings but costly turnovers and ESCU's defense prevailed the Bears from earning the win.
Junior quarterback Darron Downing (Portsmouth, VA) posted his first 100-yard game with 193 yards on 19-of-28 pass completions, a pair of touchdowns and one interception. Sophomore wide receiver Raymond Green, Jr. (Durham, NC) had four receptions for 50 yards and junior receiver Trevante Long (Greenbelt, MD) also had four receptions for 37 yards. Senior linebacker Keelan Jones (Kansas City, MO) registered a game-high 12 tackles (5 solo, 7 assisted) and one tackle-for-loss, while Junior safety Arkel McCarter (Brooklyn, NY) and freshman linebacker Devon Hunt (Rockingham, NC) tallied eight and seven tackles, respectively.
In addition, Hunt was named Rookie of the Week announced by the CIAA on Monday for the second time this season for his efforts last Saturday.
Also searching of its first win of the season, the Broncos (0-5, 0-2 CIAA) dropped a 37-3 decision to Bowie State in Bowie, Md. FSU was outscored 20-0 in the second quarter before allowing the Bulldogs to score the game's final score in the second half. Gedari Liverman had 154 total yards, including four kick returns for 115 yards and six catches for 23 yards. Quarterback Devin Knudsen completed 11-of-24 of his passes for 87 yards with an interception in his first start at FSU and Stevie Green had 78 yards on 22 carries. Defensively, Travis Scales had a game-high 11 tackles, including 10 solo.
