LADY BEARS HANDLE BOWIE STATE, 79-49

Box Score

BOWIE, Md.  – After a poor performance against Virginia Union, the Shaw University women's basketball team recovered nicely with a convincing 79-49 victory against Bowie State University on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bears had five players score in double figures, including Baltimore, Md., native Michelle Wright who led all scorers with 22 points and 10 rebounds – her first double-double of the season.

The win improves Shaw to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA, while Bowie State falls to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in league action.

Alongside Wright in double-figure scoring was Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) with 12 points and four rebounds, while Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD), Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA) and Laquisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) had 10 points each. Taylor also had 10 rebounds, while Klintisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) had seven rebounds for Shaw.

Karen Bellamy (Bronx, NY) scored the game's first two points off a layup to give the Lady Bears the early 2-0 lead.  Despite sloppy play from both teams, Shaw was able to orchestrate a 9-2 run sparked by Wright who seven points in the quarter as the Lady Bears had held a 19-14 advantage.

The Lady Bears would build their largest lead of the half at 14-points after two free throws from Anderson at the 4:32 mark.  Shaw outscored the Lady Bulldogs 21-15 to go into the locker room with a 40-29 lead at halftime.

In the first half, Shaw outscored the Lady Bulldogs 22-10 in the paint, 22-4 in bench scoring and 11-9 in points off of turnovers.

The Lady Bears picked up where they left off in the third quarter as Shaw opened up the quarter with a 6-3 run. The Lady Bulldogs would battle back after knocking down two-consecutive 3-pointers to cut at the lead (38-47) with 6:45 on the clock but Shaw would not relinquish the lead as they outscored BSU 25-14 in the quarter and 14-6 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Proctor led the Lady Bulldogs with 19 points and four assists, while Ashley Jennings added 13 points for Bowie State.

Shaw will return to the hardwood as they continue CIAA play on Monday, Jan. 11th when they travel to Lincoln University in Rivero Hall. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
