SHAW BASKETBALL TO MEET VIRGINIA UNION THURSDAY

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University men's and women's basketball team will venture on the road Thursday for Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games against Virginia Union University at the Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

 

The women's game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's contest at approximately 7:30 p.m. Live statistics and video will be available on shawbears.com. Fans can also follow live tweets on Twitter @ShawBears.

 

The Lady Bears (10-4 overall, 2-0 CIAA) are coming off a 67-64 victory over the Hawks of Chowan on Monday. Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds. For the season, Ross averages 14.6 points per game, while grabbing 10.9 rebounds per outing to lead Shaw. Kaula Jacks contributes 11.8 points to round out double digit scoring for the Lady Bears.

 

The Lady Panthers (8-1 overall, 0-1 CIAA) enters Thursday contest after suffering their first loss on the season to Johnson C. Smith in CIAA action on Dec. 19th. Kiana Johnson paces VUU in scoring with an average of 24.8 points, while Lady Walker posts 17.7 points, and Rahni Bell adds 12.3 points. Also in double figure scoring is Ashley Smith who contributes 10.4 points per game for the Lady Panthers.

 

On the men's side, the Bears (4-10 overall, 1-1 CIAA) suffered their first conference loss to Chowan, 74-58 on Monday. Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) was the lone Bear in double digit scoring with 15 points. Hopkins, Jr. averages 13.7 points per game, while Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) and David Madol (Manchester, NH) add 11.6 and 11.1 points, respectively.

 

For Virginia Union, the Panthers (6-7 overall, 0-2 CIAA) defeated Saint Augustine's University, 85-53 in a non-conference matchup on Monday night. VUU is led by Ray Anderson who averages 21.5 points per game, while Tavon Mealy and Kory Cooley add 13.8 and 10.8 points per outing.

 

Following Thursday contests, Shaw will continue its road skid to Bowie State University on Saturday, Jan. 9th.
