SHAW BASKETBALL TO HOST WINSTON-SALEM STATE FOR BLACKOUT GAME

RALEIGH, N.C.  – Shaw University men's and women's basketball teams will return to C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 20th to host Winston-Salem State University for  CIAA Southern Division matchups and blackout games with the women's contest slated for 6 p.m., followed by the men's contest at approximately 8 p.m.

The Lady Bears (12-5, 5-1 CIAA) are looking to continue their winning-streak after winning their last three games. In their last outing, Shaw defeated Livingstone, 75-72 led by Kaula Jacks' (Chesapeake Beach, MD) 24 points to lead all scorers in the contest. On the season, SU's offensive attack has been anchored by Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) who averages 13.9 points per contest and 10.1 rebounds per outing, while Jacks contributes 12.6 points per game.

 

The Lady Rams (7-8, 3-3 CIAA) will enter Wednesday action on a three-game win streak as well after earning a 74-41 victory over Saint Augustine's on Saturday. WSSU's Taylor Boyd led the effort with 18 points and nine rebounds. For the season, Kandance Tate leads the Lady Rams in scoring with an average of 11.5 points per game.

 

The Lady Bears have won the last 5-of-6 meetings and currently own a 4-game win-streak over the Lady Rams dating back to 2013.

 

On the men's side, the Bears (7-11, 4-2 CIAA) will look to recover from Saturdays 79-67 loss at Livingstone. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Shaw despite Larry Richardson, II's (Garner, NC) 20 points to lead all scorers in the game. Richardson, II leads the Bears in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game, while Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) and David Madol add 12.7 and 10.7 points, respectively.

 

The Rams (7-10, 1-5 CIAA) had four players score in double figures to pull away from the Falcons of Saint Augustine's this past Saturday to give WSSU their first conference win on the season. Rayvon Harris and Terrell Leach scored 15 points each in the win. Leach leads the Rams in scoring for the season, averaging 15.6 points per game, while Demone Harrison adds 10.9 points per contest.

 

The Bears have loss the last seven meetings against the Rams dating back to the 2012-2013 season.

 

Following Wednesday's action, Shaw will travel across town to face arch-rival Saint Augustine's University on Saturday, January 23rd inside Emery Gymnasium.
