BEARS TO FACE VIRGINIA UNION ON SATURDAY

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University football team continues to look for their first victory on the season when they host CIAA Northern Division opponent Virginia Union University on Saturday, Oct. 3rd at the Durham County Memorial Stadium with a kickoff slated for 1 p.m.

The last time these two teams met, the Bears suffered a 31-10 setback at Hovey Field.

 
 

The Bears (0-4, 0-1 CIAA) will enter Saturday's contest after coming off a disappointing 20-10 loss to the Lincoln (Pa.). Shaw was held to 40 yards on the ground and 95 yard through the air. SU scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a two yard rush by Quenton Rucker (Atlanta, GA) but the clock ran out before the Bears could make a serious comeback.

 

VUU (3-1, 1-0 CIAA) is coming off an impressive 33-3 win over Johnson C. Smith after racking up 428 offensive yards and holding the Golden Bulls to 58 total offensive yards. Quarterback Shawheem Dowdy completed 17-of-25 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns, while defensively, Joseph Blanks anchors the defense with 26 solos and six assisted for a total of 32 tackles on the season.

 

This will be the 42nd meeting between the two teams, with the Panthers leading the all-time series 28-9-3.
