Box Score LINCOLN, Pa. –The Shaw University football team was defeated by the Lincoln University 20-10 on Saturday, September 26th at the LU Stadium in their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener.
With the loss, the Bears drop to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in the league, while the Lions improve to 3-1 on the year and 1-0 in CIAA play.
Sophomore Trevante Long (Greenbelt, MD) had two receptions in the second half for 49 yards, while senior Marquise Grizzle (Camden, NC) rushed for 41 yards on 13 carries and senior Quenton Rucker (Atlanta, GA) was 8-for-20 in pass attempts for 95 yards, scoring one touchdown and two interceptions.
Defense was led by junior Moses White (Gordan Heights, NY) and Dwight Campbell (Durham, NC) who combined for 22 total tackles, including 20 solo and two assisted. Seniors Roland Green (Bluffton, SC) and Thomas Street (Compton, CA) added 10 and seven tackles, respectively.
The Bears started off well on defense as both teams went scoreless in the first quarter but Shaw found themselves trailing in the second quarter after LU's Stephen Scott scored the game's first touchdown at the 13:46 mark.
With 19 seconds left in the first half, the Lincoln's Edward McKenzie rushed for a touchdown to stretch the Lions lead to 14-0 as the Bears went into the half with the disadvantage.
In the third quarter, the Lions kicked a 28 yard field goal after driving the ball for 12 plays and 26 yards at the 6:21 mark to extend the lead 17-0.
The Bears would put together a four-play one yard drive that led to a 28 yard field goal kick for freshman Joe Nguyen (Charlotte, NC) to put Shaw on the scoreboard 17-3 with 12:33 remaining in the game; however, LU would answer back with another good field goal of their own for 34 yards to hold a 20-3 lead as 3:52 stood remaining on the game clock.
After sophomore De'Shawn Marshall's (Lawrenceville, GA) 15 yard return to the 50 yard line, the Bears moved the ball on nine plays and 50 yards which led to Rucker scoring a touchdown with 1:21 remaining to cut the deficit 20-10.
The next possession, Shaw would recover the ball after a 17 yard onside kick but was unable to score after an interception thrown by Rucker.
The Bears will look to bounce back when they host Northern Division opponent Virginia Union on Saturday, October 3rd, at Durham County Memorial Stadium with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
