Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 25, 2015) – The Shaw Lady Bears used a 7-2 run midway through the first half to pull away from Winston-Salem State and cruised the rest of the way, taking a 88-59 win in the quarterfinals of the 2015 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena
The Lady Rams looked to take charge early, building an early 11-6 lead when Jasmine Carter drilled a three pointer. Shaw responded and took the 16-13 lead when Markela Snipes connected on a jumper with 12:27 left in the opening stanza.
WSSU would fight back to force the third tie of the game at 18-18 after Briana Wilder canned a three pointer. Shaw would then go on a 25-6 run over the last nine minutes of the half to take a 44-24 lead into the halftime break.
Shaw continued to pour it on in the second half, building a lead as large as 32 points (75-43) at the 5:20 mark on a Verdine Warner layup. WSSU would not get closer than 26 points the rest of the way.
The Lady Bears (19-10) had five players score in double figures on the afternoon. Micah Brooks led the way with 16 points while Verdine Warner had 14 points and eight rebounds. Kaula Jacks, Bryann Guyton and Markela Snipes all finished with 10 points for Shaw.
Winston-Salem State (11-17) was paced by Jasmine Carter's 10 points.
With the win, Shaw advances to the semifinals for the fifth consecutive year.
