RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's and women's basketball teams begin Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play with a doubleheader on Tuesday against Elizabeth City State University with the women's game at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m. in CC Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Lady Bears (6-2, 0-0 CIAA) return to the hardwood after a week off of competition. Shaw will look to bounce back from their last outing that saw the Lady Bears drop a 72-63 decision to Francis Marion in a non-conference matchup. The Lady Bears offense shot 46.2 percent from the field and 11.1 percent from three, while allowing the Patriots to shoot 36.6 percent from the field and 23.8 percent from the three. Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, NY) tallied 12 points and Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) finished with 10 points.
The Lady Vikings (2-5, 0-0 CIAA) has won their last two games, including a 79-68 victory at The Apprentice School on Saturday. Jaylyn Brown scored 21 points, while Imani Heggins and Khadijah Bryant rounded out the ECSU double-figure scorers with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
The last time these two teams met, the Lady Bears cruised to a 90-62 victory over the Lady Vikings in the Virginia State University Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 27th.
Shaw University men's basketball (1-8, 0-0 CIAA) is coming off a 70-57 setback at nationally-ranked Bellarmine University in a non-conference matchup. David Madol (Manchester, NH) led the Bears with 16 points, including 4-of-6 from the three, while Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) added 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Vikings (2-4, 0-0 CIAA) is coming off a 78-62 loss at Barton. DeCarlos Anderson was the lone Viking player to net double figures in scoring with 22 points.
Last season, the Bears dropped a 76-66 decision at Elizabeth City State on Jan. 1st.
