RALEIGH, N.C. – As the Shaw University women's basketball team is poised to commence another season with lofty ambitions set before them, the Lady Bears will open their 2015-16 campaign with the CIAA-MEC Challenge on Friday, Nov. 13th through Saturday, Nov. 14th hosted by Fayetteville State University at Felton J. Capel Arena.
On Friday, the Lady Bears will face Fairmont State at 6 p.m. and Concord University at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Led by head coach, Jacques Curtis in his sixteenth season, the Lady Bears are coming off a 19-11 season where SU went 11-5 against CIAA competition and falling in the semifinals round of the CIAA Tournament to current champions Virginia State University. Shaw finished the season 7-4 at home and 9-6 on the road.
The Lady Bears return six members from last year's squad, Kaiya Coleman (Laurel, MD), Bryann Guyton (Richfield, MN), Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD), Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA), Laquisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) and Fantasha Tyson (Raleigh, NC). Two starters return from a season ago, including Anderson who averaged 9.7 points, 3.5 assists and shot 32.1-percent from behind the arc, while Jacks averaged 8.5 points and 2.1 assists per contest.
In addition to the six returnees, Coach Curtis has acquired seven new players for the upcoming campaign.
