ETTRICK, VA- The Shaw University women's basketball team had a tough loss on the road to Virginia State University, 84-62 in the Daniel Gymnasium on Monday evening. The loss drops the Lady Bears to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the CIAA.

Verdine Warner paced the Bears in scoring with 21 points and hauled in 13 rebounds, followed by Jasmyn Trawick added 10 points while Tabatha Anderson chipped in seven points. New comer Fantasha Tyson pulled down six rebounds for the Bears.

Four Trojans scored double digit points in Monday evening's game. Jessica Lyons led all players in the game with 24 points for Virginia State Tiffanie Adair added 18 points. Cana Marriott and Dashae Jones scored 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Younique Upchurch scored first in the contest to hand the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead. Kaula Jacks and Warner would also score in the first minutes of the game to give Shaw a 6-0 lead. A jump shot from Adair would enable the Trojans to take the lead, 7-6. A Warner layup at the 4:14 mark would put Shaw within three points (24-21) of Virginia State. Shaw trailed Virginia State 31-24 heading into halftime.  


The Lady Bears were unable to battle back in the second half. A jump shot from Jones would give the Trojans an 11 point advantage as they began to pull away with the lead. The Bears trailed by double-digit points for the remainder of the contest.

The Lady Bears will be back in action on January 8th, as they host the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University. Tip-off is slated for 6:00pm.
