Box Score (Durham, NC) - Senior wide receiver Nick Jones broke the Shaw record for single game receiving yards (212 yards), Saturday afternoon against The Lincoln University Lions in Durham County Stadium.
With the win Shaw is now 2-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in the conference. The Lincoln University drops to 1-3.
This was the first time that the Bears and Lions had met since 2009 when the Bears defeated the Lions 68-6.
Defensively, the Bears held the Lions to 302 total yards and sacked the Lions four times in the win. Junior Raheem Bramwell had seven tackles, six solo, one unassisted and three tackles for a loss. The Lincoln University had just 100 yards on the ground.
The Bears were able to get on the board within the first two minutes in the first quarter when senior Jonathan Reyes rushed for a six-yard touchdown. Ten minutes later Kelvin Wagner caught a 13- yard pass from Trey Folston for the second touchdown of the first quarter for the Bears.
Shaw opened up the second quarter with another touchdown, this time from quarterback Trey Folston rushing in from 22-yards out. The Bears defense held strong, not allowing the Lions to put any points up in the second quarter.
The Bears led the Lions 18-12 going into the second half.
A short 4-play, 33-yard drive took 1:22 off the clock. A 33-yard pass caught by Ronnie Williams scored the first touchdown of the third quarter for the Bears.
It was during the third quarter that Nick Jones broke the Shaw record for single game receiving yards. Jones caught a pass from Folston for 53-yards, totaling 212 receiving yards in Saturday's game.
A punt by Lincoln's Brett Arkelian was blocked by Shaw's Thomas Street and recovered by Jeremiah Gandy for another touchdown, giving the Bears a 30-20 lead going in to the fourth quarter.
The Bears only touchdown of the fourth quarter came when Atravius James caught a seven-yard pass from Folston. Andre Polite completed the two point conversion, putting the Bears up 38-20. The Lions were able to put seven more points on the board but was still not enough to win the game.
Bramwell's seven tackles led the Bears. Tavarjia Fuller and Dwight Campbell both had six solo tackles, with one and two tackles for losses respectively.
Folston finished the game 14-for-19 for 289 yards and three touchdowns.
"Any time you can get a win you take it, but we need to learn how to close out games," said head coach Robert Massey. "Defensively we play a lot better than we showed offensively we left points on the field. When we feel that we are better man-for-man we should go out and display that in our play. We didn't do that today, this was too close of a game."
The Bears travel to Richmond, VA where they will take on the Panthers of Virginia Union University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
