University of West Alabama produced 407 yards of total offense on the evening with quarterback Kyle Caldwell completing 8 of 17 passes for 133 yards. He connected with five different receivers and projected three touchdown passes in the victory.
The Bears could not generate a ground game, with negative 26 net yards rushing. Shaw quarterbacks Trey Folston and Vincent Jefferies spent much of the game scrambling - losing 12 yards and 21 yards on the ground respectively.
During the first quarter Tigers quarterback Kyle Caldwell made a 16 yard run scoring the first touchdown for the Tigers.
The Tigers added a 27 yard field goal by Mark Grant before the half giving the Tigers a 10-0 lead at halftime.
Both teams came out of the locker room playing strong defense and held each other scoreless in the third quarter. Mid-way through the fourth quarter wide receiver, Kowaski Kitchens, scored from six yards out putting the Bears on the board scoring 23-6.Trey Folston attempted a two-point conversion but was blocked by Tigers defense.
Defensively Shaw was led by Chris Ellerbe who finished with six tackles solo and one break-up, while defensive back Thomas Street who totaled six tackles and one interception.
The Bears return home on September 20th when they take on University of North Carolina at Pembroke in the season home opener. Kick-off is slated for 6:30pm.
