RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball team held a double-digit lead in the first half of Saturday's game against cross-town rival Saint Augustine's, but lost that lead by the half. It took a late second half comeback to lift the Lady Bears past the Lady Falcons 66-62 in front of a packed house at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The win breaks a two-game losing streak and gives the Lady Bears a 15-8 overall mark, 9-4 in the CIAA and 5-2 in the conference's Southern Division. Saint Augustine's falls to 10-12, 5-8 in the conference and 1-6 in the division.
The Lady Bears had the hot shooting hand in the game, with a 41.8 shooting mark, while the Shaw defense held Saint Aug to only 31 percent shooting. Shaw struggled from the free throw line for the second straight game, hitting only 65.5 percent of their shots from the charity line while the Lady Falcons hit 80 percent of their free throws.
Shaw opened the game scoring five straight points, but Saint Aug tied the game and held it close, claiming an 8-7 lead with 15:37 remaining in the first.
Shaw scored ten straight, building a 17-8 lead on a fastbreak layup from Diamond Mitchell.
With 10:30 left in the first, the Lady Falcons trimmed the Shaw lead to four, 19-15, but the Lady Bears responded with a nine-point run, culminating in a Kayla Jacks jumper on a fastbreak to give Shaw a 28-15 lead with 6:04 remaining in the half.
The Lady Falcons scored eight straight, allowed a Verdine Warner layup for Shaw, then closed out the half on a 13-point run to give them a 36-30 lead.
Saint Augustine's extended the lead to eight with the first bucket of the second half, and the lead hovered between the six and eight-point mark for the first four minutes of the half.
With 7:09 left in the game, Ebony Spencer hit a jumper for the Lady Falcons to again extend their lead to eight at 55-47.
Shaw scored the next six points, with a pair of free throws from Jacks cutting the Lady Falcon lead to two at 55-53.
After Saint Aug got a bucket, the Lady Bears went on a 12-2 run, turning a four-point deficit into a six-point advantage with 14 seconds left in the contest. The teams shot free throws the rest of the way, with Shaw finally claiming the 66-62 win.
Jacks led the Lady Bears with 20 points and four assists. Warner finished with a double-double -- and was three blocks shy of a triple-double -- with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
Regime McCombs was the only Lady Falcon in double digits with ten points. Ten Saint Augustine's players scored -- with seven scoring six or more. Kaleisha Moore had ten rebounds and Jeanne-Marie Wilson had three assists to lead the Lady Falcons.
Prior to the game, Shaw recognized head coach Jacques Curtis for his 300th win, which he claimed earlier this season. It was also the annual Think Pink game to raise awareness for breast cancer.
The Lady Bears return to action Monday when they travel to Winston-Salem State to make up the game that was postponed last week because of the inclement weather. Tip is 5:30. Shaw returns home for Senior Night Wednesday, when they host Fayetteville State in a 6:00 tip.
