[Salisbury, NC] - Shaw went on a 31-7 scoring run to end the game and powered past Livingstone Monday night in a game played at New Trent Gym on the Livingstone campus.
After suffering their first CIAA loss Saturday, the Lady Bears rebounded with the win and are now 15-6 overall, 10-1 in the conference and 4-1 in the division. Livingstone falls to 7-16, 2-9 in the CIAA and 0-4 in the Southern Division.
The Lady Bears shot 61.3 percent on 19 for 31 field goal shooting in the second half, helping them reclaim and build the lead. The Lady Blue Bears shot 33.3 percent in both the first and second halves, and could not match the Shaw offensive outburst to end the game.
The defense not only held the Lady Blue Bears to the 33.3 percent shooting night, but also forced 27 turnovers, converting them into 33 points.
Livingstone held a 54-51 lead with 9:59 left in the game, but Kyria Buford and Shemieka Brown keyed a 13-point scoring run that gave the Lady Bears a ten-point lead with 6:35 left in the game.
Shaw took the early lead, running off eight points to begin the game. Livingstone answered with 11 points of their own, taking an 11-8 lead when Kelcyn Manurs hit a pair of free throws with 10:53 left in the half.
The Lady Bears answered with six points of their own, building a three-point lead when Brown hit a jumper on the left side of the lane. With 5:59 left in the first, Allyssa Lane hit a jumper of her own to give Shaw a 23-16 lead.
Livingstone responded with a ten-point run of their own, taking a 26-23 lead with 4:21 left in the half. The two teams exchanged buckets the rest of the half, going into the locker room with a 33-33 tie.
The Lady Blue Bears opened the second half with a 9-3 run, taking the 42-36 lead with 17:53 left in the game when Kendra McKinney hit a layup off the fastbreak.
Livingstone continued to hold the lead until Buford hit a jumper off a pass from Crystal Harris to give Shaw their first lead of the second half with 8:33 remaining in the game. The Lady Bears would never look back, closing out the game with a combination of strong offense and oppressive defense.
Buford finished the game with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, leading both teams in the two categories. Three other Lady Bears finished in double figures. Brown added 17 points, Harris 12 and Lane ten. Buford, Harris and Sequoyah Griffin led the Lady Bears with four assists apiece.
McKinney led the Lady Blue Bears with 16 points, while Jasmine Murray added 13 and Manurs had ten. Murray also led Livingstone with eight rebounds and four players had two assists apiece.
The Lady Bears return to action Saturday night when they travel to Winston-Salem, NC to take on Winston-Salem State for a 5:30 tip. They return home until Monday, February 13 when they host JCSU in the annual Pink Zone Game. Tip for that contest is at 6:00 p.m. at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus.
