[Charlotte, NC] - Shaw ended their ten-game winning streak with a 68-66 loss to Johnson C. Smith Saturday night in a game played at Brayboy Gymnasium. The Lady Bears were plagued by turnovers and an inability to hit a shot from beyond the arc.
Shavonda Price hit a bucket with eight seconds left in the game to give the Lady Golden Bulls the 68-66 lead. Brittney Spencer tried to tie the score with a jumper, but her shot was off the mark and Shaw suffered its first conference loss this season.
The two teams were battling for sole possession of first place in the CIAA's Southern Division. JCSU now claims that spot with a 10-0 conference record, 4-0 in the division and 16-3 overall. Shaw drops to 14-6 overall, 9-1 in the CIAA and 3-1 in the division.
Shaw committed 22 turnovers in the game, ten of those coming in the first 12 minutes of the game. JCSU took advantage, scoring 12 points off of turnovers in the first half - 20 in the entire game.
Both teams struggled throughout the night with poor shooting, but JCSU broke through from long distance, hitting nine of the 25 shots they launched from beyond the three-point arc, while Shaw did not hit a single one of its seven attempts. Overall, the Lady Golden Bulls hit 37.1 percent of their field goal attempts while Shaw hit 38.3 percent.
Shaw held its one strong advantage on the boards, collecting 51 rebounds to JCSU's 35.
Neither team built a lead larger than six points, and the score was tied ten times throughout the evening's play.
With 7:01 left in the game, Aslea Williams hit a layup, was fouled and sank the ensuing free throw to give the Lady Bears a 53-47 lead - the largest lead either team held in the game.
JCSU scored the next five straight, trimming the lead to one and setting up a final 6:27 that saw neither team build a two-possession lead.
With 1:39 left in the contest, Crystal Harris hit a pair of free throws that tied the game for the ninth time. Williams would add two more free throws, to give Shaw a 66-64 lead, but LaQwesha Gamble and Price scored the last four points of the game to give the Lady Bulls the win and sole possession of the lead in the southern division.
Williams finished the night with 19 points and 15 rebounds while Crystal Harris had a season-high 20 points to pace the Lady Bears. Allyssa Lane had four assists.
Terran Quattlebaum led Johnson C. Smith with 27 points, while Gamble had a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Terrica Jones added another 11. Ashley McGee led both squads with seven assists.
The Lady Bears return to action Monday night when they travel to Salisbury, NC to take on Livingstone for a 5:30 tip. They do not return home until Monday, February 13 when they host JCSU in the annual Pink Zone Game. Tip for that contest is at 6:00 p.m. at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus.
