Seniors Help Lead Lady Bears Past Winston-Salem State 83-57

[Raleigh, NC] -  Four Lady Bears - including three of the seniors honored before the game - had double figures and two had double-doubles as Shaw sped past Winston-Salem State 83-57 in a game played at Shaw's C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Monday night.

 

Aslea Williams and Kyria Buford - two of the seven seniors honored before the game - had double-doubles.  Williams scored 13 and pulled in 11 rebounds while Buford added 10 points and 12 rebounds to the Shaw totals.  Sophomore Crystal Harris came one rebound shy of joining the double-double club, with ten points and nine boards.

 

The Lady Bears improve to 19-6 on the season.  They are 14-1 in the CIAA and 8-1 in the Southern Division.  Winston-Salem State falls to 16-9, 11-4 in the conference and 5-4 in the division.

 

The Lady Bears outshot the Lady Rams 44.1 percent to 25 percent, but took eight fewer shots (76-68).  Shaw also held a distinct advantage in rebounds, pulling in 58 boards compared to WSSU's 44.

 

In addition to strong defense, the Lady Bears shared the ball, collecting 21 assists.  Nine different players had assists for Shaw.  In contrast, the Lady Rams had only six assists.

 

Shaw jumped to an early 6-0 lead and increased the margin to 12 points when Brittney Spencer - also a senior - hit a three pointer from the top of the arc and made the score 18-6.  The Lady Rams were not able to cut the margin below ten the rest of the way.

 

The Lady Bears played most of the rest of the half with a lead in the higher teens, but were not able to stretch the margin to 20 until there were 27 seconds left in the half when Harris hit a layup to send Shaw into the half with a 44-23 lead.

 

Winston-Salem State cut the lead to 17 in the opening 90 seconds of the second half, but Shaw stretched the lead over 20 again within two minutes.  With 14:53 left in the game, Spencer hit another three, giving the Bears a 55-34 lead.  WSSU would not cut the margin lower than 20 the rest of the way.

 

During the game, seniors Victoria Tanner and Kyria Buford collected their 500th rebounds.  Tanner finished out her career in Spaulding with an 11-point performance with four rebounds.    All seven of the Shaw seniors made the box score.  Allyssa Lane and Spencer each had eight points while Shemieka Brown had six and Brittany Ransom had four.

 

In addition to her ten points and 12 rebounds, Buford led the team with four assists.

 

Courtney Medley was the only Lady Ram in double digits, with ten points.  LaQuanda Williams led WSSU with 12 rebounds.

 

The Lady Bears close out their season Thursday evening when they travel across town to take on Saint Augustine's in a 5:30 p.m. tip.
