Last Second Saint Aug Touchdown Fells Shaw 43-42

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C.  - With just under four minutes left in the game, James Stallons broke the Shaw record with his sixth touchdown pass of the game and gave Shaw a 42-30 lead.  But the Falcons scored two touchdowns in the last 96 seconds of the game to pull out a 43-42 win over Shaw in a game played at George Williams Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

While the offense was having one of its most productive afternoons of the season, the Bears suffered 15 penalties for 176 yards.  The Falcons obtained 10 of their 33 first downs  on Shaw penalties.

"The same demons that bit us all year came back and bit us again," said Shaw head coach Robert Massey.  "We had penalties in key places.  I think we had some mental errors.  That allowed Saint Augustine's to get some momentum, and we couldn't get it back."

With the loss, the Bears close out the 2012 season - the first under Massey - with a 4-6 record, 3-4 in the CIAA.  Saint Augustine's finishes their season 6-4, 4-3 in the conference.

"We were limited for a lot of reasons.  We didn't get a full recruiting season in.  Our lines were a work in progress for the entire season," said Massey.  "This season was part of the process on learning how to win.  This time next year, we will have a deeper understanding of what it takes to win and how to have the consistency we need.  This time next year we will be in a much different position."

He continued, "I'm indebted to my seniors.  They stuck around through the change and were real leaders on this team. "

While the defense may have failed the Bears in those last minutes, it was the offense that was the talk of the afternoon as Stallons continued to rewrite the Shaw passing record books.  His 54 attempts tied the record set in 2005 and his six touchdowns topped the previous record of five.  His 84 yard completion to Ta'Juan Brown topped the previous record by two yards.

Stallons finishes the season with his second straight 412-yard game to finish the season with 3,101 yards, shattering the previous mark of 2,105 yards set in 2005.  With the six TDs today, he also breaks the single season touchdown mark with 22 on the season.

"We knew that he had the potential to be very good.  He carried us," said Massey.  "He's a bright young man who helped us a lot.  He has a real chance to play at the next level.  He's everything we expected from him and then some.  We're going to miss him."

Stallons connected with six different receivers on the afternoon, including All-American cornerback and one of the nation's leading return men Darnell Evans, who hauled in four passes for 81 yards and the touchdown that opened Shaw's scoring on the afternoon.

"We had talked about putting him in, and even run it some in practice, but we hadn't done it in a game," said Massey.  "He's an outstanding athlete and he did a good job.  He doesn't enjoy being on the offensive side of the ball as much.  At the end of the day he's going to help us by being a shut-down corner and outstanding return man."

The Evans touchdown gave the Bears a 7-3 lead - a lead they would hold until the clock read zero.

In the closing seconds of the first quarter, Stallons hit Marquise Grizzle on a pitch that turned into a six-yard touchdown pass and a 14-3 lead.

Saint Augustine's Teddy Bacote connected with Tyron Laughinghouse for a short two-yard touchdown that tightened the Shaw lead to 14-10.

With just under two minutes left in the half, Micquel Johnson intercepted a Bacote pass for the first of his three interceptions.  The Bears had 1:54 to cover 47 yards.

With the running game stalled, Stallons led the drive downfield, going four of five and ending with a 19-yard touchdown strike to Derek Grant with seven seconds left on the clock that gave the Bears a 21-10 halftime lead.

The second half both began and ended on a bad note for the Bears.  The Bears fumbled on their first drive of the half, giving the Falcons the ball and a short field.  Roderick Davenport rushed the ball four straight times, with the last three-yard dash pushing the ball into the end zone.  The snap of the PAT was fumbled, so Shaw still held a 21-16 lead.

Two drives later, Saint Augustine's moved within field goal range, but the kick was blocked, giving the Bears back the ball at the 20.  After a sack of Stallons, he hit Brown for the 84-yard touchdown that both set a school record and gave Shaw a 28-16 lead.

Saint Aug responded on the next drive.  After Bacote pushed the team downfield on his arm, Rowdy Batchelor barreled into the end zone on a four-yard rush to again trim the Shaw lead to five, 28-23.

With half a minute left in the third, Johnson again picked off Bacote, returning it to the Saint Aug 17.  A penalty moved the ball to the nine and Stallons then found David Jordan to give the Bears a 35-23 lead as the clock expired.

Two new faces drove the Falcons down the field on their first possession of the fourth quarter.  Running back Deonte Toliver rushed four times for 31 yards while Alex Munro came in at quarterback and connected with Jermaine Jones for a critical 23-yard gain.

But it was Davenport that sealed the deal with a seven-yard rush that again trimmed the Shaw lead to five, 35-30.

Most of the rest of the quarter passed quietly, with neither team gaining any traction - or significant yardage - until a bad punt gave the Bears the ball on their own  40 with 4:38 left in the game.  With a strike to Evans for 35 yards as its cornerstone, Stallons took only four plays to cover the 60 yards and give the Bears a 42-30 lead with 3:45 left in the game.

Opening on their own 33, Munro began picking apart the Shaw defense, either passing or rushing the ball on every play of the drive.  With 1:36 left in the game, he hit Jones on a six-yard strike that cut the Shaw lead to 42-37.

The Bears had 95 seconds to kill, but Saint Augustine's had two timeouts and used them.  With the running game stalled, the Bears were forced to punt with 1:07 left on the clock.  Stallons did the honors on the punt and the ball was downed on the Falcon two-yard line.

Munro again picked apart the Shaw defense, but had help from Shaw penalties - one of which overturned a Keith Lomon interception that would have ended the game - as they drove 98 yards.  With three seconds left on the clock and Saint Augustine's on the Shaw 15, Munro dropped back and found Brian Richards as the clock hit 0:00 to give Saint Augustine's the 43-42 win.

Stallons was forced to pass by the lack of a Shaw run game.  On the afternoon, the Bears gained only 30 yards on the ground.  Antonio Dunn had 27 yards to lead the team.   Stallons finished the day 27 for 54 with one interception and six touchdowns.

Nick Jones was the leading receiver for Shaw, hauling in eight passes for 104 yards.  Jordan finished the afternoon with seven receptions for 68 yards and two touchdowns, while Evans had four catches for 81 yards and a TD.

Defensively, Johnson had three interceptions, returning them for a total of 97 yards.  Quintero Long was the leading tackler for Shaw with 12 tackles and a pass break up.  Keith Lomon had 11 tackles while Chris Martin finished with nine tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss.

Bacote finished the day 21 for 36 for 178 yards and a touchdown.  Munro was six for 12 for 129 yards and two touchdowns.   Laughinghouse was the top receiver with 121 yards and one touchdown on seven catches.  Davenport finished the game with 22 rushes for 112 yards.

Defensively, the Falcons were led by Javarous Faulk who finished with six tackles, including a sack and two tackles for a loss.  Carlton Butts also had six tackles and recovered one fumble.
