[Raleigh, NC] - Twelve Shaw players made the scoring column and four went for double figures as the Lady Bears downed visiting Livingstone 101-72 in a game played Saturday afternoon at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The win is Shaw's ninth straight and boosts their season mark to 13-5, 8-0 in the CIAA and 2-0 in the conference's southern division. Livingstone drops to 7-13, 2-6 in the CIAA and 0-2 in the division.
The game was decided in the early minutes of the game as the Lady Bears scored 20 straight points in the first five minutes. They didn't allow the Lady Blue Bears to hit the scoreboard until 14:51 remained in the first.
"Our goal was to run and we did that well, especially early," said Shaw associate head coach Carl Hatchell. "I'm a fast break coach and I had fun watching them get up and down the court today."
Midway through the first, Livingstone had only scored eight points. Hatchell says the Lady Bears changed tactics against the Lady Blue Bears. "We have been playing zone, but when we scouted Livingstone, we realized they liked to dictate the pace of the game. We wanted to make them run up and down, and we did that well early in the game."
All 12 players for Shaw scored, and seven scored seven or more points.
"We shared the ball well," said Hatchell. "We had 21 assists which means someone had to make a good pass, but someone else had to finish, too. "
After leading 59-29 at halftime, the only question in the second appeared to be how many points Shaw could amass and how high the margin of victory would be. The Blue Bears, though, played Shaw evenly throughout the second - in large part because they hit 17 of 28 free throws, after having shot only seven in the first half.
"One of our goals was not to foul them," Hatchell said. "We lost focus on that in the second and it showed."
In the first half, after taking the 20-0 lead, the Lady Bears continued to have the hot hand and smothering defense. With 8:50 left in the first, Brittany Ransom hit a layup on the fastbreak on a feed from Isayra Diaz to extend the Shaw lead to 44-8 - the largest lead the Lady Bears would hold in the game.
Over the next eight minutes, Livingstone outscored Shaw 21-8 to trim the lead to 23, but even in the second, they never made a serious run on the Shaw advantage.
With 1:28 left in the game, Diaz hit a layup off a pass from Brittney Spencer to break the century mark for the Bears, giving them a 101-68 lead. The Lady Blue Bears would close out the game scoring four straight to give Shaw the 101-72 final.
Every Lady Bear who played scored, led by Aslea Williams who had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kyria Buford had 16 points, Crystal Harris 13 and Shemeika Brown 10. Harris came one rebound shy of a double-double with nine. Allyssa Lane had five assists to lead Shaw.
For Livingstone, Kelcyn Manurs had 14, Cierra York added 13 and Kendray McKinney added another 11. Stella Holloway was the top rebounder for the Lady Blue Bears with nine.
The Lady Bears return to action Monday night when they host Fayetteville State at 6:00 p.m. The game is at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus.
