Lady Bear Defense Shuts Down Bowie State for 87-48 Win

Box Score

[Raleigh, NC] - Shaw held Bowie State to  only 20.7 percent shooting and got a balanced scoring attack to power past the visiting Lady Bulldogs 87-48 in a game played at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Thursday night.

"Defensively we aren't bad," said Shaw head coach Jacques Curtis.  "We put up a lot of points, but we aren't efficient.  We're satisfied with where we are now, but know we can get better."

In addition to forcing the Lady Bulldogs to take low percentage shots, the Lady Bears forced 22 turnovers.

Eleven Lady Bears found the scoring column, and only one player - Sequoyah Griffin - saw more than 21 minutes of playing time.  Kyria Buford had 17 points and 10 rebounds in only 17 minutes of playing time.  Crystal Harris had 12 rebounds and nine points in only 18 minutes of playing time.

"Our stats aren't going to be big, because we play so many people," Curtis said.  "We're evolving slowly because we aren't getting a lot of practice time with so many games.  We're learning to play on the fly."

Shaw controlled all aspects of the game.  They shot 42.7 percent to BSU's 20.7 and outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 67-43.

Bowie State broke on top early in the first, scoring the first six points of the game, but the Lady Bears then roared back, outscoring BSU 27-3 in the ensuing 11 minutes.  With 6:16 left in the first, Brittney Spencer hit a jumper to give the Lady Bears a 27-9 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs then found some offensive footing, scoring the next four points and trimming the Shaw lead to 14 when Kimberly Jones hit a layup off the fastbreak.

With 50 seconds remaining in the half, Jasmine Jacobs hit a jumper to again trim the Shaw lead to 14 at 32-18.  Brittany Ransom and Buford then combined to score five straight points to close out the half and make the score 37-18 at the half.

The Lady Bears scored nine points to open the second half and never looked back.  The Lady Bulldogs did not get closer than 23 points the rest of the game.

With 7:24 left in the game, Brittney Spencer hit two free throws to put the lead over 30 and begin a ten-point scoring run that culminated with an Aslea Williams tip in that made the score 74-34 with 5:20 showing on the clock.

The Lady Bears would lead by as many as 42, but Juliette Turner's jumper for Bowie State with 20 seconds left on the clock cut the final margin to 39, 87-48.

Griffin led all scorers with 19 points and she pulled in eight rebounds.  Williams, Spencer and Harris had nine points apiece.   Harris and Lane had three assists each to pace Shaw.  With the win, the Lady Bears improve to 7-5 on the season, 3-0 in the CIAA.

Turner had 15 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs.  Brooke Miles added 12 and Kimberly Jones 10 for Bowie State.  Jones and Miles had seven rebounds apiece.   The loss drops Bowie State to 1-10, 1-3 in the CIAA.

The Lady Bears return to action Saturday as they travel to Murfreesboro, NC, to take on Chowan.  Tip is a 1:00 p.m.  They return home on Thursday, January 19 when they host Lincoln (PA).  Game time Thursday is at 5:30 p.m. at the C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus.
