(Lincoln, PA) - While they trailed by as much as 14 points in the first half, the Shaw Lady Bears found their footing and went on a number of scoring runs to defeat Lincoln (PA) 89-60.
Shaw (11-7, 4-3 CIAA) had four scoring runs of eight or more unanswered points during the game. Lincoln (1-12, 0-6 CIAA) had one 11-point run - the run that gave them the early lead - but could not keep up with the Lady Bears as the game progressed.
The Lady Bears built the lead by taking advantage of Lincoln miscues, scoring 45 points off of Lady Lion turnovers.
After Shaw had taken a one-point lead early in the game, the Lady Lions ran off 13 straight points, building a 16-4 lead with 13:30 left in the first. Two minutes later, they would stretch the lead to 14 points.
With 9:12 left in the half, Sharay DuBose hit a layup for the Lady Lions to give them a 25-14 lead. Twenty seconds later, Kyria Buford hit a layup that began an 11-point run that tied the game with 5:01 on the clock.
Lincoln again claimed a lead – this time three points – but Shemieka Brown's trey tied the score and triggered a nine-point run that gave the Lady Bears the 34-28 lead with 1:33 left in the half. Lincoln would never regain the lead. Shaw went into the locker room at the half with a 41-33 lead.
As the second half opened, neither team got a firm hold on the game. With 16:46 left, Danielle Smallwood hit a three-pointer for the Lincoln that cut the Shaw lead to eight, 44-36. A minute later, Brittney Spencer hit a layup that began another Shaw scoring run – this one nine points – that stretched the lead to 17 points.
The Lady Bears continued to pour on the offense, and with 3:37 left in the game, Aslea Williams hit a layup to stretch the advantage to 34 points. While the Lady Lions would trim that lead, they did not have time on the clock to pose a real threat. The Lady Bears finished with the 29-point, 89-60, win.
Kyria Buford had her seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Brittany Ransom led Shaw with 20 points. Brown had 12 points and Spencer ten to round out the double-digit scoring for the Lady Bears. Spencer had eight assists to lead Shaw.
Brittney Waters had 22 points to lead all scorers. DuBose had 13 points and Smallwood 10 for the Lady Lions. DuBose pulled in ten rebounds for the double-double. Alease Tabb led Lincoln with 13 boards. Sasha Evans had seven assists.
The Lady Bears travel across Raleigh Saturday to take on cross-town rival Saint Augustine's at 2:00 p.m.
