Shaw Duo Powers Bears Past Johnson C. Smith 80–76

RALEIGH, NC --Dreveon Scott scored 24 points and Avery Huggins added 23 and the Shaw men's basketball team beat the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls 80-76 at home Wednesday.

The Bears (15-7, 7-7) had three players score in double figures, led by Scott, who had 24 points and three steals. Huggins added 23 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks and Isaiah Buckley helped out with 15 points and four steals.

Led by Alijah England's five offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.

The Shaw defense was a problem in Wednesday's game, forcing 17 Johnson C. Smith turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Buckley's four steals led the way individually for the Bears.

How It Happened

After falling behind 22-20, Shaw went on an 8-0 run with 10:00 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Huggins, to take a 28-22 lead. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 42-38 advantage. Shaw did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 42 points close to the basket.

Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Huggins' jumper, to grow the lead to 49-40 with 18:06 to go in the contest. The Golden Bulls narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still held on for the 80-76 win. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 38 points in the lane.
