RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team got a 20-point showing from the bench, but fell 75-61 to the Virginia Union Panthers at home Tuesday.
The Bears (10-3, 2-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Avery Huggins, who had 14 points, two steals and four blocks. Dreveon Scott tacked on 10 points and three steals and Isaiah Buckley added eight points, five assists and four steals.
The Shaw offense was very productive from three point land, pouring in nine threes on 29 attempts. Scott was the most prolific shooter for the Bears, draining two treys in the contest.
Shaw forced 15 Virginia Union turnovers. The Bears turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Buckley's four steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 35-26 heading into halftime.
Virginia Union kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 63-49 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Buckley's layup, to shrink the deficit to 63-54 with 4:53 to go in the contest. Virginia Union responded and outscored the Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-61. Shaw shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting six shots from deep to score 18 of its 35 points.
