Early Penalty Kick Sinks Shaw at Newberry

Newberry, S.C. – The Shaw University women's soccer team battled throughout but came up short on the road Wednesday evening, falling 1–0 to Newberry at the Smith Road Complex.

The Wolves struck early, converting a penalty kick in the 14th minute by Emily Castaneda for what proved to be the game's lone goal. Despite the early deficit, Shaw kept the contest within reach behind a strong effort in net from Olivia Ankrom, who recorded eight saves while facing 18 total shots.

The Lady Bears generated seven shots of their own, with Lorena Gonzalez leading the attack with five attempts, including two on target. Ziara Brunson and Thea Schillaci also registered looks at goal as Shaw pressed for an equalizer in the second half.

Defensively, the back line of Julissa Martinez, Galicia Monforte, and Rhianna Smith helped keep Newberry off the board for the final 76 minutes, but Shaw could not find the breakthrough.

With the result, Shaw moves to 1-3-2 overall. The Bears return to action on Wednesday, October 1, hosting the University of Mount Olive at 4:30 p.m. inside Durham County Memorial Stadium.
