FERRUM, Va. – The Shaw University men's soccer team opened its 2025 campaign on the road Wednesday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Ferrum College at Penn-Roediger Field.
.Ferrum (1-0) struck early, taking the lead in just the third minute when Jadon Brooks found the back of the net to put the Panthers ahead 1-0. Shaw (0-1) settled in defensively as goalkeeper Joel Tellez recorded three first-half saves to keep the Bears within striking distance.
The Panthers doubled their advantage in the 57th minute as Amanuel Walie converted off an assist from Andres Torres-Cortes to extend the margin to 2-0.
.Shaw responded with urgency, breaking through in the 77th minute when sophomore Jacky Fulu connected on a strike assisted by
Cameron Thomas, trimming the deficit to 2-1.
. Despite several late pushes, the Bears could not find the equalizer.
Tellez turned in a strong performance in goal with eight saves on 10 shots faced, while the Bears managed nine total shots with seven on frame. Ferrum finished with a 13-9 edge in shots and 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.
The Bears will look to rebound when they travel to Pfeiffer University on Friday, September 12, with kickoff set for 4 p.m. in Misenheimer, N.C.
