GAME 1 | Shaw 14, Clark Atlanta 11
ATLANTA, Ga. --The Shaw Bears took a 7-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 14-11 victory over the Clark Atlanta Panthers on Saturday.
Freshman C. Mendoza (1-0) got the win for Shaw (1-0). The right-hander went two innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on seven hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Bears got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Shaw's offense started clicking and put up seven runs, including a two-run triple off the bat of freshman S. Scott.
The Lady Bears then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fourth inning after the Panthers cut it to 7-4. Shaw pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of freshman A. Newell that brought home sophomore T. Kelly and senior K. Walker, which brought the Lady Bears lead to 9-4.
Shaw held Clark Atlanta scoreless before expanding their lead to 10-4 the following inning. The Lady Bears pushed across a run on Kelly's two-out RBI double.
The Panthers gained ground, closing the gap to 10-5 until Shaw added some insurance in the sixth. The Lady Bears scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run double off the bat of Scott, bringing the Shaw advantage to 14-5. Clark Atlanta put six runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still held on for the 14-11 win.
GAME NOTES» The Bears power output was led by Scott, who compiled two extra base hits in the ballgame.
