RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team got a 30-point performance from the bench, but fell 86-82 to the Livingstone Blue Bears at home Saturday.
The Bears (11-12, 6-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Trent McIntyre, who had 24 points and four assists. Darius Abraham tacked on 14 points off the bench and Dee Barnes helped out with 11 points.
The Shaw offense was very productive from deep, making 10 threes on 24 attempts. Abraham was the most prolific shooter for the Bears, draining four treys in the contest.
The Shaw defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 16 Livingstone turnovers while committing 13. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Dreveon Scott led the way individually for the Bears with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 26-22, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 7:16 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Barnes, to take a 31-26 lead. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 42-39 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 42 points.
Livingstone proceeded to take a 49-45 lead before Shaw went on a 6-0 run, finished off by McIntyre's layup, to seize a 51-49 lead with 12:16 to go in the contest. Livingstone re-asserted control, outscoring the Bears 37-31 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 86-82 loss. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 40 points in the lane but once again struggled at the free throw line finishing 16-26 on the contest.Â
