Shaw Drops Road Contest at Claflin

ORANGEBURG, S.C./Edward L. Tullis Arena --The Shaw men's basketball team saw all five starters reach double figures in points, but it was not enough in a 94-80 loss to the Claflin Panthers on the road Wednesday.

The Bears (11-13, 6-7) had five players score in double figures, led by Jermaine Vereen, who had 14 points. Dreveon Scott tacked on 14 points and three steals and Dee Barnes chipped in as well with 13 points.

Vereen pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the Shaw offense which grabbed 13 boards and turned them into 19 second chance points.

Shaw forced 14 Claflin turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Bears turned those takeaways into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Scott's three steals led the way for Shaw.

How It Happened

Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 49-37 heading into halftime.

Claflin kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing an 84-64 advantage before Shaw went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Jaylen Bandy's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 84-72 with 4:02 to go in the contest. Claflin responded and outscored the Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 94-80. Shaw made the most of seven offensive rebounds to tack on 12 second chance points out of 43 total in the period.
