CHARLOTTE, NC --Trent McIntyre and Dreveon Scott combined to score 44 total points - 71 percent of Shaw's points - but the Bears fell to the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls 64-62 on the road Saturday.
McIntyre led the Bears (11-14, 6-7) with 25 points. Scott added 19 points and three steals and Jermaine Vereen chipped in as well with six points and six rebounds off the bench.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 18-14 advantage, Shaw went on a 7-0 run with 6:54 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Scott, to increase its lead to 25-14. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 34-30 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 34 points.
Following intermission, Shaw kept widening that lead, expanding it to 37-32 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by McIntyre's three, to grow the lead to 42-32 with 16:30 to go in the contest. Johnson C. Smith then asserted control, outscoring the Bears 32-20 the rest of the way as McIntyre's shot at the buzzer to tie went off the rim to hand Shaw the 64-62 loss. Shaw capitalized on five Johnson C. Smith turnovers in the period, collecting seven points off those turnovers but would prove to be not enough.Â
