Winston-Salem NC--The Shaw men's basketball team got a 27-point performance from the bench, but fell 83-68 to the Winston-Salem Rams on the road Friday.
Trent McIntyre led the Bears (11-16, 6-9) with 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks. Dreveon Scott also added nine points and four steals and Dee Barnes helped out with seven points and two steals.
Led by McIntyre's three offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.
Shaw did a great job disrupting Winston-Salem shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Jermaine Vereen led the way individually for the Bears with two rejections.
How It Happened
Shaw started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a three from Scott, to take an early lead with 18:59 left in the first half. The Bears then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 34-25.
WSSU kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 45-25 advantage before Shaw went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Elijah Scranton's layup, to shrink the deficit to 45-35 with 14:04 to go in the contest. Winston-Salem State responded and outscored the Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 83-68. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 43 points in the lane.
