BALTIMORE, MD --The Shaw men's basketball team got a 33-point showing from the bench, but fell 71-45 to the Virginia Union Panthers at CFG Bank Arena Tuesday.
Trent McIntyre led the Bears (11-17) with eight points. Dreveon Scott tacked on six points off of the bench and Jermaine Vereen helped out with five points.
Led by Dee Barnes' two offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in four second chance points.
The Shaw defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Tuesday's game, forcing 24 Virginia Union turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Barnes led the way individually for the Bears with two steals.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 32-18 heading into halftime.
After intermission, Shaw managed to gain control and had a 62-37 lead before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Ellija Preddy's jumper, to grow the lead to 68-37 with 2:38 to go in the contest. Virginia Union then asserted control, outscoring the Bears 34--23 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 71-45 loss. Shaw capitalized on 12 Virginia Union turnovers in the period, collecting 10 points off those turnovers.
