Atkinson Leads Shaw Past Elizabeth City State 56-49

ELIZABETH CITY, NC --D'Ayzha Atkinson hit a dagger jumper with 47 seconds left in the game to put Shaw up 52-44, and the Lady Bears earned a 56-49 victory over the Elizabeth City State Vikings on the road Tuesday.

Mahogany Collins had a double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 blocks to lead the Lady Bears (3-5, 1-0 CIAA). Atkinson added 22 points, seven rebounds and three steals and Skylar Adams helped out with five points and three steals.

Led by Atkinson's four offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in four second chance points.

Shaw's defense held Elizabeth City State to only 20.7 percent shooting from the field, including 20.8 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

Shaw kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 19-16.

Shaw then cut the Vikings lead to 20-19 before going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Ashara Spruill, to take a 29-20 lead. The Vikings cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 33-25 advantage heading into halftime. Shaw was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 17 points.

Shaw continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Atkinson, to expand its lead further to 38-26 with 8:17 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Vikings had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Bears still entered the fourth quarter with a 42-35 edge. Shaw took advantage of six Elizabeth City State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.

Shaw kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 50-37 with 6:06 to go in the contest. The Vikings narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 56-49 win. Shaw got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring four fast break points.
