BLUEFIELD, WV --The Shaw women's basketball team got a 20-point performance from the bench, but fell 79-54 to the Bluefield State Big Blue on the road Saturday.
D'Ayzha Atkinson led the Lady Bears (3-6, 1-1) with 16 points, four assists and two steals. Ashara Spruill also tacked on seven points, two steals and three blocks and Arianna Lopez chipped in as well with nine points and four assists.
Atkinson pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 12 second chance points.
Shaw's defense held Bluefield State to only 34.2 percent shooting from the field, including 25.9 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 25-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 40-28 halftime deficit.
Shaw's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Bears faced a 63-39 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Shaw took advantage of five Bluefield State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 79-54. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 15 total points.
