Defensive Effort Not Enough as Lady Bears Fall to Barton

RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team held Barton to just 15 percent from 3-point range in a 3-for-20 shooting performance, but fell 56-44 to the Bulldogs at home Saturday.

Mahogany Collins led the Lady Bears (2-5) with seven points, six rebounds and nine blocks. D'Ayzha Atkinson also tacked on 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals and Skylar Adams chipped in as well with six points, five assists and two steals.

Jazzmen Robinson pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into three second chance points.

Shaw's defense held Barton to only 15 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 31.1 percent from the field. The Lady Bears also limited Leah Hampton to 0-of-8 shooting from downtown and five points in the game.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 5-3 advantage, Shaw went on an 8-0 run with 7:06 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Arianna Lopez, to increase its lead to 13-3. The Lady Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-11 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.

The Bears could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 29-28.

Shaw came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Lopez, to grab a 33-29 lead with 8:07 to go in the third. Barton responded to seize a 47-38 lead entering the fourth quarter. Shaw knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 10 total points.

Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 56-44. Shaw fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its six points.

» The Lady Bears held the Bulldogs to only 31.1 percent shooting from the field.
