Late Free Throws Leads Shaw Past Virginia State 79-78

Bears Off to Best Start in Over 20 years

RALEIGH, NC -- Avion Pinner knocked down two free throws with 11 seconds remaining on the clock to put the Shaw men's basketball team up for good in a 79-78 victory against the Virginia State Trojans at home Wednesday.

The Bears (7-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Dreveon Scott, who had 20 points and two steals. Isaiah Buckley tacked on 14 points and seven assists and Alijah England helped out with 12 points.

The 7-0 start surpasses both 2001-02 and 2002-03 Shaw squads who both started 6-0.

The Shaw offense was very productive from downtown, pouring in 12 threes on 28 attempts. Scott was the most prolific shooter for the Bears, draining four treys in the contest.

Shaw did a great job disrupting Virginia State (4-4) shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Avery Huggins' four rejections led the way individually for the Bears.

How It Happened

Shaw started off strong, putting together a 38-34 lead heading into halftime.

Virginia State proceeded to take a 57-51 lead before Shaw went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Shamon Jackson's layup, to seize a 58-57 lead with 11:54 to go in the contest.  Shaw shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting nine shots from deep to score 27 of its 41 points including a Darius Abraham three out of a timeout to give Shaw a one point lead. The Bears and Trojans traded leads late before Pinner's offensive rebound and putback sent him to the line for the game winning free throws. Shaw came away with two stops in the last 11 seconds to seal the win.
