Shaw falls short in 66-65 loss to Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team fell just short in a 66-65 loss to the Elizabeth City State Vikings on the road Tuesday.

The Bears (7-2, 0-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Dreveon Scott, who had 13 points, two steals and three blocks. Avery Huggins tacked on 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks and Alijah England helped out with 10 points and two steals.

Shaw did a great job disrupting Elizabeth City State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Scott's three rejections led the way individually for the Bears.

How It Happened

After falling behind 23-15, Shaw went on an 11-0 run with 7:13 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Huggins, to take a 26-23 lead. The Bears then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 35-28.

Elizabeth City State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 43-33 advantage before Shaw went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Isaiah Buckley's three, to shrink the deficit to 43-41 with 14:23 to go in the contest. The Bears kept their comeback going, holding the lead with 00:56 left to play, and had a chance to take a final lead but missed a layup through contact allowing Elizabeth City State to hold on for the 66-65 win. Shaw got out on the break in the period, scoring nine fast break points.

» The Shaw defense forced 13 turnovers.
» The Bears were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying six blocks as a team.
» Dreveon Scott and Avery Huggins led the Bears with 13 points apiece.
