BLUEFIELD, WV --Avery Huggins scored 31 points and Alijah England added 28, but the Shaw men's basketball team fell to the Bluefield State Big Blue 93-78 on the road Saturday.
Huggins and England's stellar scoring performances led the Bears (7-3, 0-2) in the contest. Huggins tacked on two steals and England added five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Kyan Bowman also helped out with nine points.
The Shaw defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Bluefield State turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Isaiah Buckley led the way individually for the Bears with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 41-25, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 4:31 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Huggins, to narrow its deficit to 41-30. The Bears continued to close the gap, cutting the Bluefield State lead to 48-41 by the end of the first half.
Bluefield State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 50-41 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Huggins' three, to shrink the deficit to 50-46 with 18:58 to go in the contest. Bluefield State responded and outscored the Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 93-78. Shaw got out on the break in the period, scoring nine fast break points.
