Bears Overcome Double Digit Deficit to Defeat Trojans

PETERSBURG, VA --The Shaw men's basketball team went into halftime tied with Virginia State 38-38, but took control in the second half to knock off the Trojans 87-83 on the road Tuesday.

The Bears (8-3, 1-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Isaiah Buckley, who had 21 points, six assists and two steals. Darius Abraham tacked on 11 points and Dreveon Scott helped out with 10 points.

Led by Tamari Rowland's four offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 18 second chance points.

Shaw did a great job disrupting Virginia State shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Shamon Jackson led the way individually for the Bears with two rejections.

How It Happened

After falling behind 13-1, Shaw went on a 10-0 run with 15:35 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Isaac Tatum, to narrow its deficit to 13-11. The Bears continued to narrow the gap and tied the game at 38-38 heading into halftime. Shaw took advantage of nine Virginia State turnovers in the period, and scoring 17 points of those turnovers.

After intermission, Shaw grabbed a 77-73 lead before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Scott's layup, to grow its advantage to 83-73 with 1:07 to go in the contest. The Trojans narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still held on for the 87-83 win. Shaw capitalized on 11 Virginia State turnovers in the period, collecting 15 points off those turnovers.
