Shaw secures 79-73 win against Virginia Union on fourth-quarter comeback

RICHMOND, VA --The Shaw women's basketball team fought back from a 58-52 deficit after the third quarter to knock off the Virginia Union Panthers 79-73 on the road Sunday.

The Bears (4-6, 2-2) had two players score in double figures, led by D'Ayzha Atkinson, who put together a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Leasia Matthews tacked on 16 points and Mahogany Collins added three points, 11 rebounds and six blocks.

Led by Atkinson's five offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.

Shaw did a great job disrupting Virginia Union shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Collins' six rejections led the way individually for the Bears.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 6-5 advantage, Shaw went on a 7-0 run with 6:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Atkinson, to increase its lead to 13-5. The Bears then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 24-12 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 24 points.

Shaw kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 2:41 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Atkinson, to increase its lead to 39-27. The Panthers cut into that lead, but the Bears still enjoyed a 41-31 advantage heading into halftime.

Shaw then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Panthers 58-52 entering the fourth. Shaw knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 11 total points.

Virginia Union kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 63-54 advantage before Shaw went on a 9-0 run to even the score at 63 all with 6:37 to go in the contest. The Bears kept the rally going and took the lead for good on Serenity Johnson's three-pointer with 00:19 left to grab the 79-73 victory.
