RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit at 57-47 with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter to knock off the Virginia Union Panthers 63-60 at home Tuesday
The Lady Bears (5-7, 3-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Mikyah Finley, who had 26 points, six rebounds and two steals. D'Ayzha Atkinson added 17 points and seven rebounds and Sokhna Toure added two blocks.
The Shaw offense was impressive from deep, pouring in 10 threes on 26 attempts. Finley hit seven treys for the Lady Bears in the contest.
Shaw's defense held Virginia Union to only 39 percent shooting from the field, including 27.3 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After falling behind 18-5, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 57 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Atkinson, to narrow its deficit to 18-11, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
Virginia Union kept adding to that lead, building a 20-11 advantage before Shaw went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 20. Virginia Union then took control, putting the Lady Bears at a 29-22 disadvantage heading into halftime.
Shaw and Virginia Union both put up eight points in the third quarter, keeping the deficit even at 37-30 entering the fourth. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.
Virginia Union kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 59-50 advantage before Shaw went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Finley's three, to shrink the deficit to 59-58 with 1:04 to go in the contest. The Lady Bears kept the rally going and took the lead for good on Atkinson's free throw with 00:01 left for a 63-60 comeback victory. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 17 of its 33 total points.
