PEMBROKE, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team kept UNCP to just 16.7 percent from 3-point range in a 4-for-24 shooting performance on the way to an 84-80 win against the Braves on the road Sunday.
The Bears (6-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Isaiah Buckley, who had 22 points, six assists and three steals. Avery Huggins tacked on 19 points, eight rebounds and five steals and Alijah England chipped in as well with 17 points and three steals.
Shaw's defense held North Carolina-Pembroke to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Bears also limited Javonte Waverly to 1-of-7 shooting from downtown in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 22-14, Shaw went on a 7-0 run with 9:21 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Dreveon Scott, to narrow its deficit to 22-21. The Bears then closed the rest of the gap and grabbed a 40-38 lead heading into halftime. Shaw did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 26 of its 40 points close to the basket.
Shaw kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Scott's layup, to grow the lead to 78-69 with 5:19 to go in the contest. The Braves narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still held on for the 84-80 win. Shaw capitalized on eight North Carolina-Pembroke turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.
