PEMBROKE, N.C. — A strong second-half surge and a 20-point performance from sophomore guard Isaiah Buckley helped Shaw secure a 77–71 win over Ferrum Saturday evening in their opening game of the UNCP Thanksgiving Tournament inside the English E. Jones Center.
The victory pushes Shaw to 5–0 on the season.
Shaw opened the game on a 9–3 run fueled by early baskets from Darius Abraham and Avion Pinner, but Ferrum responded with a steady offensive push to take a narrow 36–33 lead into halftime. Despite 10 first-half turnovers, the Bears stayed within reach by controlling the paint and converting free throws.
Coming out of the break, Shaw wasted little time regaining momentum. A pair of quick buckets and a defensive stop sparked a 9–2 run that shifted the lead back in Shaw's favor. Buckley took control in the second half, attacking the rim, drawing fouls and knocking down nine of eleven attempts from the line to help create separation late.
Avery Huggins delivered another key scoring night, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocks while providing rim protection in crucial moments. Abraham added 11 points, including three made 3-pointers, while Dreveon Scott continued his steady all-around play with 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Shaw finished the night shooting 50 percent from the field and scored 36 points in the paint while turning defense into offense with 22 fast break points. The Bears also posted eight blocks and eight steals, applying defensive pressure throughout the contest.
Ferrum stayed within striking distance behind strong guard play and timely perimeter shooting, but Shaw held off each push, knocking down late free throws and forcing contested attempts to seal the win.
