Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Shaw Uses Offensive Surge to Push Past Mount Olive, Improve to 2–0

RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaw University men's basketball continued its strong start to the season Monday night, using timely scoring runs and defensive stops to earn a 93-89 victory over the University of Mount Olive inside Spaulding Gymnasium.

Shaw set the tone early, pushing the pace and dictating tempo with transition offense. The Bears jumped ahead behind back-to-back threes from Darius Abraham and multiple fast-break finishes by Dreveon Scott, helping Shaw build a 10-point lead midway through the first half. Mount Olive responded with a run of its own, tying the game at 42-42 before Shaw closed the half ahead 45-42.

The second half featured heavy swings and intensity, with the teams trading leads 12 times and tying on 10 occasions. Mount Olive briefly took control behind hot perimeter shooting, but Shaw answered with a decisive stretch inside the final five minutes. Avery Huggins powered a 7-0 run with a layup, a three-point play, and a pair of free throws, shifting momentum permanently in the Bears' favor.

Scott led Shaw with 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting, including three three-pointers, and added five rebounds. Huggins played one of his most complete games of the season with 24 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Abraham finished with 11 points and two threes.

Off the bench, Alijah England provided a major spark with 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Isaiah Buckley chipped in eight points and four assists while helping facilitate the offense in late-game situations.

Shaw's aggressive style was a key factor, generating 33 fast-break points and turning 15 Mount Olive turnovers into 19 points. The Bears also controlled the glass with 42 rebounds, including 13 on the offensive end, resulting in key second-chance points down the stretch.

With the win, Shaw improves to 2–0 and continues nonconference play Wednesday night in Wilson, NC as they face the Barton College Bulldogs. Tipoff is slated for 7 PM.
