BOWIE, MD --The Shaw women's basketball team held Bowie State to just 15 percent from beyond the arc in a 3-for-20 shooting performance, but fell 56-47 to the Bulldogs on the road Thursday.
The Lady Bears (5-10, 3-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes, who had 12 points. D'Ayzha Akinson tacked on 11 points and six rebounds and Mahogany Collins added three points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.
Shaw's defense held Bowie State to only 31.9 percent shooting from the field, including 15 percent from beyond the arc. The Lady Bears also limited Mia Smith to 3-of-15 shooting and eight points in the game.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 32-15 halftime deficit.
After intermission, Shaw cut its deficit to 36-23 before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Mikyah Finley, to trim its deficit to 36-30 with 4:17 to go in the third. The Lady Bears were unable to cut further into the deficit, but did not cede ground to Bowie State either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 43-37. Shaw knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter to score 15 of its 22 total points.
Bowie State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 52-39 advantage before Shaw went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Akinson's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 52-45 with 3:40 to go in the contest. Bowie State responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 56-47. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 10 points in the paint.
