BOWIE, MD --Dreveon Scott scored 24 points to help lead the Shaw men's basketball team past the Bowie State Bulldogs 65-57 on the road Thursday.
Scott added five steals and two blocks to his 24 point game to lead the Bears (8-8, 3-1). Elijah Scranton helped out with six points, six rebounds and five steals and Jermaine Vereen chipped in with eight points and five blocks.
Shaw out-rebounded Bowie State 30-27 in Thursday's game, paced by Scranton's six boards.
Shaw's defense held Bowie State to only 37.5 percent shooting from the field. The Bulldogs did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed five second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-14, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 4:41 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Justin Harris, to take a 19-16 lead. The Bears then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 24-21 advantage. Shaw did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 24 points close to the basket.
Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Vereen's jumper, to grow the lead to 60-51 with 1:55 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 65-57 win. Shaw capitalized on 11 Bowie State turnovers in the period, collecting 17 points off those turnovers.
