RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team went into the halftime break trailing Johnson C. Smith 38-30, but fought back from the deficit to tie the game at 76-76, force overtime and eventually beat the Golden Bulls 87-86 at home Tuesday.
The Bears (11-9, 6-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Trent McIntyre, who had 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists and five steals. Elijah Scranton added a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Dreveon Scott chipped in as well with 16 points and two steals.
Scranton pulled down seven offensive rebounds to pace the Shaw offense which grabbed 16 boards and turned them into 18 second chance points.
Shaw did a great job disrupting Johnson C. Smith shots in the contest, coming away with nine blocks. Jermaine Vereen's five rejections led the way individually for the Bears.
How It Happened
After falling behind 33-25, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 4:40 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from McIntyre, to narrow its deficit to 33-30. Johnson C. Smith answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Bears down 38-30 entering halftime.
Shaw narrowed its deficit to 63-58 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Scott's three, to seize a 66-63 lead with 6:05 to go in the contest. The Golden Bulls then fought back to even things up at 76-76 and send the game to overtime after both teams came up empty with chances to win in regulation. Shaw made the most of five offensive rebounds to tack on nine second chance points out of 46 total in the period.
Shaw then took care of business in extra time, outscoring Johnson C. Smith 11-10 with Dee Barnes connecting on two free throws with 0.5 left to seize victory by the 87-86 final score.
