RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team got a 41-point performance from the bench, but fell 85-70 to the Claflin Panthers at home Saturday.
The Bears (11-10, 6-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Darius Abraham, who had 14 points. Justin Harris tacked on 12 points and two steals from the bench and Elijah Scranton added seven points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Led by Scranton's four offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.
The Shaw defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 23 Claflin turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 22 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jermaine Vereen led the way individually for the Bears with three steals.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 43-29 heading into halftime.
Claflin kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 79-53 advantage before Shaw went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Ellija Preddy's layup, to shrink the deficit to 79-59 with 2:41 to go in the contest. The Bears kept their comeback going, but Claflin managed to hold on for the 85-70 win. Shaw capitalized on 13 Claflin turnovers in the period, collecting 12 points off those turnovers.
