Belcher Breaks Record in Shaw Loss to Catawba

DURHAM, North Carolina -- Shaw fell 37-28 to Catawba at home Saturday night.

The Indians improved to 1-1 on the season while the Bears dropped to 2-1.

Christian Peters led Shaw's passing attack with 115 yards through the air, tossing three touchdowns without throwing an interception.

Travon Tensley led all Bears rushers with 99 yards and one touchdown in the contest, picking up 5 yards per carry. Jerry Eaton also added 59 yards on the ground, averaging 7.4 yards per carry.

Ah'shaan Belcher reeled in four catches for 51 yards and two scores. His second score made him Shaw's all-time leader in touchdown receptions. 

Jalen Banks showed out for the Shaw defense totaling 10 tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack. Noah Terry tallied 9 total tackles while William Marble finished with a fumble recovery. 

The Bears won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing one turnover while avoiding any giveaways, with Shaw turning that takeaway into eight points. Shaw converted on 41.7 percent of third-down attempts on the day. The Bears also went 2-for-3 on fourth down.

Defensively, Shaw held up fairly well against the Catawba rushing attack, holding the Indians to 124 yards on the ground. In part because of that stellar defense, Shaw runners out-gained their Catawba counterparts 139-124.

Shaw's offense took advantage of its trips to the red zone, scoring on four of its four trips, with all of those scores being touchdowns.

How It Happened

Shaw responded to a 7-0 lead from Catawba with a score to tie the game at 7-7 with 6:17 left in the first quarter.Catawba then scored to take a 14-7 lead before the Bears put a touchdown on the board to close the gap and make it a 14-13 game.

Shaw followed with an eight-yard touchdown reception from to Belcher at the 8:00 mark in the second quarter and took a 21-14 lead in the process.Catawba fought back to take a 30-21 lead, but the Bears got on the scoreboard again to close the gap and make it a 30-28 game. Shaw didn't score again in the game and Catawba added seven more points to finish off the scoring.
