Bears Fall in Opening Round to Vikings

BALTIMORE, MD --The Shaw men's basketball team got a 32-point showing from the bench, but fell 70-67 to the Elizabeth City State University Vikings in the opening round of the 2024 CIAA Tournament at CFG Bank Arena Tuesday evening.

The Bears (13-14) had three players score in double figures, led by Shayne Saigo, who had 14 points. Dreveon Scott added 13 points and two blocks off of the bench and Trent McIntyre helped out with 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Shaw out-rebounded Elizabeth City State 31-27 in Tuesday's game, led by seven boards from Jamari Roberts.

Shaw forced 14 Elizabeth City State turnovers. The Bears turned those takeaways into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Corey Rutherford led the way individually with two steals.

How It Happened

After falling behind 15-8, Shaw went on an 11-0 run with 11:38 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Doriuntas Barnes, to take a 19-15 lead. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 28-25 advantage. Shaw capitalized on eight Elizabeth City State turnovers in the period, turning them into nine points on the other end of the floor.

Shaw started tacking on points in the second half almost immediately, going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 34-25 with 17:34 to go in the contest. Elizabeth City State then asserted control, outscoring the Bears 45-33 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 70-67 loss. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 39 points in the lane.
