How It Happened
After jumping out to a 9-7 advantage, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 2:07 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Barreno, to increase its lead to 14-7. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-12 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
Virginia Union rallied to take a 16-14 lead before Shaw went on a 6-0 run starting at the 6:43 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Elbarky, to take a 20-16 lead. The Panthers then came roaring back to take a 29-27 lead heading into halftime.
Following halftime, Shaw kept the Panthers from growing their lead before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Elfatairy, to grab a 39-33 lead with 1:44 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Panthers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Bears still entered the fourth quarter with a 39-37 edge. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
Shaw then surrendered that advantage as Virginia Union forced overtime by tying things up at 59-59 by the end of the fourth. Ross-Barnes' shot sent the contest to an extra period as time expired. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.
Shaw then took care of business in extra time, outscoring Virginia Union 6-5 to seize victory by the 65-64 final score.
