Lady Bears earn 57-47 victory over Rams

RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team went into halftime tied with Winston-Salem State 25-25, but took control in the second half to beat the Rams 57-47 at home Thursday.

The Lady Bears (13-14, 8-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Alexis Radcliff, who had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Alliyah Chaplin added 11 points and Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes added seven points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Radcliff pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 14 second chance points.

Shaw did a great job disrupting Winston-Salem shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Ross-Barnes' four rejections led the way individually for the Bears.

How It Happened

After falling behind 9-7, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 1:32 left in the first quarter to take a 12-9 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 12 points close to the basket.

Winston-Salem State rallied to take a 16-15 lead before Shaw went on a 5-0 run starting at the 3:44 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Radcliff, to take a 20-16 lead. The Rams then battled back to even it up at 25-25 heading into halftime. Shaw was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 13 points.

Shaw started the third quarter on a high note, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Ross-Barnes, to grab a 30-25 lead with 8:37 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Lady Bears added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 41-33 edge. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.

Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 57-41 with 56 seconds to go in the contest. The Rams narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 57-47 win. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
